Creases, those annoying folds in the toe of your sneakers. They occur with almost every step you take, and every time it feels like a small attack on your grails. Can you prevent them? And once they are there, can you remove them? We list the facts.
Why do creases form?
Creases are caused by the natural bending of your foot while walking. The material in the nose folds with every step, leaving marks. How fast and how deep depends on a number of factors:
- Material. Leather creasts faster than synthetic, but also recovers better. Mesh and canvas creases are less deep but are more difficult to repair.
- Fit. Oversized sneakers create more room for the material to fold.
- Use. Intensive daily use significantly speeds up the process.
- Moisture. Wet sneakers that dry incorrectly deform and create permanent creases.
Creases are largely unavoidable. But you can slow them down, minimize them, and in many cases significantly reduce them.
Reduce existing creases: start with REINS Cleaner
Many creases look worse than they are, caked on dirt, discolored creases and dried material enhance the visual effect. The REINS Sneaker Cleaner is the first step: it thoroughly cleans the material and makes it softer, making creases less deep and less visible.
This is how you do it:
- Spray REINS Cleaner on a dry microfiber cloth.
- Rub the crease areas in circular motions.
- Remove excess residue with a slightly damp cloth.
- Allow to dry completely before taking any further steps.
Always do this first; you will see that some of the creases become considerably less noticeable after thorough cleaning.
Other methods: do they work?
There are methods that are recommended to reduce creases. They can have an effect, but also have clear limitations:
- Steam + pressure (towel and iron). Heat makes leather temporarily supple, after which you can smooth out the fold. Works for leather, but the risk of material damage is real if you do not control the temperature properly. Always use a damp towel as a buffer and test on an invisible spot first.
- Shoe trees. Maintain the shape of your sneaker during storage and prevent existing creases from deepening. Useful as a preventative tool, but does not remove existing creases.
- Crease protectors. Plastic inserts that go into the toe of your sneaker and prevent folds during wear. Effective as prevention, but changes the fit and walking feeling, not comfortable for everyone.
You better not do this
- Allowing wet sneakers to dry incorrectly. This is one of the biggest causes of permanent creases. Always let sneakers dry at room temperature, never on a heater or in direct sunlight.
- Wearing a size that is too large. The more space there is in the nose, the deeper the creases. Fit is the first line of defense.
- Aggressive agents on leather. Acetone, bleach or strong solvents damage the material and make creases permanent.
- Iron without buffer. Direct heat on leather or synthetic material burns or deforms the surface.
Prevention: REINS Protection as a basis
The best way to minimize creases is to protect the material before they occur. REINS Protection places a protective layer over the material. Moist material deforms faster and deeper, dry and protected material is more resilient and recovers better.
Apply REINS Protection to new sneakers before wearing them for the first time. Repeat this every six months, or more often with intensive use.
Combine this with:
- Shoe trees during storage: keep the shape and prevent creases from deepening.
- Alternating between pairs: gives the material time to recover.
- Right fit: the simplest and most underestimated prevention.
When are creases permanent?
Not every crease can be repaired. Signs that the damage is too deep:
- The material is cracked or torn at the fold line.
- The foam inside is permanently deformed.
- Multiple treatments have not produced visible results.
In that case, professional restoration or replacement is the only option.
Creases are part of it, but you have influence
Every worn sneaker eventually develops creases. That's not a mistake, it's usage. But with the right protection and a regular maintenance routine, you can keep them to a minimum and your sneakers in top condition. Start with the REINS Sneaker Cleaner for existing creases and then protect with REINS Protection, so you give your sneakers the best chance.
